A Greeley man is dead today after he crashed his motorcycle late Sunday night.
Tom Gutierrez, 57, was riding his motorcycle west on 9th Street around 10 p.m. when he struck a reflective sign near the island that houses Jupiter Burger at 23rd Avenue. He crashed and struck his head, but police are unsure of whether he hit it on a curb, a sign or the pavement.
He is now the fourth motorcyclist to die on Weld County roads this year compared to only three throughout 2011. Like the three other motorcycle deaths this year, Gutierrez was not wearing a helmet.
Greeley Police Sgt. Susan West said when police arrived, Gutierrez was suffering from a serious head injury and his breathing was very ragged.
West said that witnesses showed up on scene, reporting that Gutierrez had shown up at their house, having been drinking already. There, he drank some more and residents attempted to take his away his keys, West said, but he wouldnt allow them to.
He left the house and crashed moments later. He was taken to North Colorado Medical Center, but was declared dead Monday. Officials kept him on life support for possible organ donation.,
He is now the 15th person to die on Weld County roads this year compared to 12 at this time last year.
