JUPITER — A Jupiter man was charged today in a fiery 2011 vehicle crash that killed his older brother, town police said.
Mario Pizano, 36, was arrested this morning on charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter. He was released this afternoon on supervised recognizance, Palm Beach County Jail records show.
According to police, Pizano crashed his car at the entrance of the Egret Landing community on Central Boulevard on the night of Oct. 9, 2011. The car burst into flames with both Pizano and his older brother, Jose, 39, trapped inside.
Town police officers used fire extinguishers to contain the fire until Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews arrived.
Jose Pizano was pronounced dead at the scene. Mario, who was driving, was flown by Trauma Hawk to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.
Police determined Mario Pizano was negligent and that he had been driving recklessly. Toxicology results revealed he was under the influence with a blood-alcohol level of 0.149. The state limit for intoxication is 0.08.
