A 6-year-old boy and his mother were killed and two other people injured this evening in a multi-vehicle wreck on Lake Shore Drive in the Uptown community, authorities said.
The Chicago boy was pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m. at Lurie Children’s Hospital after the crash, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. His name and address were not being released yet tonight.
Officer Darryl Baety, a spokesman for the Chicago Police, said the child’s mother was also killed in the three-vehicle wreck that happened at 6:06 p.m. on Lake Shore Drive near Montrose.
The northbound vehicle carrying the mother and child went out of control and crossed over the median into the southbound lanes, where it struck another vehicle, said Beaty.
The mother and child were both killed, Baety said.
One driver whose vehicle was rear-ended was taken to an area hospital with minor injures and has been released as of 8:45 p.m.
A fourth victim from a third vehicle was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with unknown injuries, Baety said. The Fire Department said that person initially was in serious-to-critical condition.
The Chicago Fire Department said the four victims were taken by ambulance to Lurie, two to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and Weiss Memorial Hospital.
The crash caused the temporary closure of LSD between Hollywood and Foster Avenue.
