Off-duty firefighter crashed car into tree

An off-duty firefighter was involved in a car crash just after 6 p.m. Friday, according to reports.

Allan Ortman, spokesman for West Palm Beach Police, said the firefighter crashed his Volkswagen into a tree at the corner of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and Carver Avenue, just east of Australian Avenue.

Ortman said he did not know the extent of the firefighter’s injuries or whether there were other passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

NewsChannel 5 reported that officers at the scene said the firefighter swerved to avoid hitting a car that had cut him off, which led to him hitting the tree.

Channel 5 also reported that The Jaws of Life were used to remove the firefighter and a passenger with him. The two were transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

No further information regarding the accident was immediately available.
