A woman was severely injured in a one-car crash in Federal Way early Saturday and pulled from a burning car by the driver, who was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault.
The State Patrol reported a 2003 BMW heading south on Interstate 5 apparently caught fire after it left the road and struck an electrical junction box and a column supporting a sign. The accident was reported by multiple callers at 4:06 a.m.
The driver, a 21-year-old Fort Lewis man, suffered leg injuries but was able to pull the passenger, a 29-year-old woman, out of the car before flames engulfed it. The woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of severe internal injuries.
The driver was arrested and taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where he was in stable condition.
Detectives are investigating whether high speed and alcohol played a role in the crash. Witnesses or others with information for investigators are asked to call 425-401-7742.
