WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) – Deputies say a 21-year-old man struck and killed a pedestrian in southwest Florida, then left the scene and stopped for an alcoholic drink.
Polk County deputies arrested Richard Schenfield Friday on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with a fatality, and failure to obtain a valid driver’s license.
Deputies pulled Schenfield over as he drove by the crash earlier this week that killed 51-year-old William Moates. He denied knowing anything about the accident. But deputies later said they found evidence under Schenfield’s car linking him to the accident.
The Orlando Sentinel (http://lb.vg/qf870) reports that investigators also obtained surveillance video from a convenience store that shows Schenfield examining the front of his car, then buying an alcoholic beverage inside. He then checked the car again, apparently looking for damage.
