BELLE GLADE — A dense fog blanketed much of the Glades area on Tuesday morning, continuing well into the late morning hours and causing a series of accidents on the heavily traveled State Road 80, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, although one of the accidents involved a collision with a moving train. The events shut down traffic on the highway for two hours while emergency aid responded and investigators with the sheriff’s office and Florida Highway Patrol pored over the scene. Emergency crews responded to the scene of the accidents at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 28 — maneuvering through stubborn fog themselves — to find a number of accidents between S.R. 80 and Hatton Highway and Sugar House Road.
PBSO reports the first accident occurred on S.R. 80, just east of Sugar House Road near a railroad crossing. One of the vehicles involved sideswiped two other vehicles and collided into a train crossing the roadway.
It may have been a particularly heavy fog that descended on the area, as a second accident was reported approximately 1,000 yards west of the first scene, this one involving four vehicles. According to the sheriff’s office, the combination of the thick fog obscuring visibility, as well as careless driving under the conditions, was responsible for the accidents.
