The crash Friday in the early hours on Village Boulevard was unlike any that West Palm Beach Police traffic homicide investigator Ryan Secord had seen in six years on this job.
The crash happened about 3:40 a.m. As he described it, a red Mercedes convertible was moving “at a very high rate of speed” well above the 40 mph posted speed limit headed north when the driver hit the curb and lost control of the car.
First, it hit a guide wire to a power line. The impact turned the car backward as it then hit a wooden barricade, launching the car into the air which then flew 71 feet north over a canal. the car flipped upside down landing on top of its driver, a man perhaps in his early 30s.
“He was the only one in the vehicle, thank God,” Secord said. He suffered “very critical injuries” and is being treated at St. Mary’s Medical Center, he said. “It’s not looking good,” he said. The driver’s name has not yet been released.
The crash occurred near Cumberland Drive, south of Village Baptist Church and north of the Bear Lakes Country Club.
The investigators will be looking to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. If you have any information on the crash contact Secord or investigator James Ingrassia.
