A car was accidentally backed over a 14-month-old boy in the driveway of a Boynton Beach home on Saturday, critically injuring him, police said.
A 24-year-old family member was backing out of the driveway in a red 1995 BMW when the boy was hit about 10 a.m. in the 100 block of North Atlantic Drive, police said.
The family member drove the boy to Bethesda Hospital, but the boy’s injuries were so severe that he was transferred to Delray Trauma Center, Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said. The boy was in critical condition, Slater said.
“It’s a sad situation. It’s such a tragedy,” said Denise Holm, a longtime neighborhood resident, who said children often play outside homes in the area.
A 5-year-old boy playing with the child at the time of the accident rushed over and pulled him from underneath the car.
The boy’s family couldn’t be reached for comment despite a visit to the home Saturday. Any charges are pending the outcome of an investigation, police said.
