A man has died after losing control of his car and crashing into a wall on Interstate 95 early this morning, Boynton Beach Police spokesperson Stephanie Slater said.
Cyrus Deal, 38, of Boynton Beach, was attempting to flee police in a silver Volkswagon Beetle when he lost control of the car, slammed into a side wall and was ejected. He died at the scene.
Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, which began around 1 a.m. when a Boynton Beach police officer tried to pull Deal over near Gateway Boulevard and I-95 after noticing the car he was driving matched the description of one that had been used in a possible armed robbery or was stolen about a week ago.
Deal refused to stop and sped off northbound. Just before reaching the Lantana Road exit, he lost control of the car, hit a wall and then a pole, flipped several times and then was ejected.
As is standard protocol, the officer involved was placed on administrative leave with pay pending a review of the incident. Slater did not identify the officer Saturday.
