BRIEF: Man killed following pursuit by Boynton Beach police officer
Jun 30, 2012 (Sun Sentinel – McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) –
A man died early Saturday after attempting to flee from a Boynton Beach police officer in pursuit of his silver Volkswagen Beetle, police said.
The incident occurred about 1 a.m. when the officer spotted the car on Interstate 95 and recognized it as a possible stolen car that may have been involved in an armed robbery, police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said in an e-mail.
The officer tried to conduct a traffic stop at I-95 and Gateway Boulevard, but the driver ignored the emergency lights and siren and fled northbound.
The unidentified motorist lost control of his car near Lantana Road and was ejected from the Beetle after crashing into the side wall.
He died at the scene, police said.
The officer involved in the deadly crash has been placed on administrative leave with pay as is standard when there is a fatality and a police officer is involved.
Police are not releasing the officer’s name at this time, Slater said.
