Life threatening injuries sustained in SH6 crash

A male believed to be in his 50′s who was involved on a head on collision on State Highway 6 south of Havelock was flown to Wellington hospital at 3:30 today 27 June 2012 by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter with life threatening injuries.

There were two patients that had to be cut from their respective vehicles, the first patient took some 45 minutes to be extracted by Blenheim, Nelson and Havelock fire crews.

Because both of the drivers were trapped and suffered life threatening injuries the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter called for a second Helicopter for the second male patient that took over one hour to remove from his vehicle.

Both patients were treated by St John Intensive Care Paramedics at the scene for their injuries before transportation.

State Highway 6 reopened to a single lane at approximately 5:30.
