A 29-year-old man is facing aggravated battery charges after authorities say he grabbed his ex’s steering wheel and crashed her car, telling her she’s better off dead if not with him.
Ramon Jimenez, of suburban Lake Worth, was arrested Wednesday evening.
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to Wellington Regional Hospital about 5 p.m. to reports of a domestic violence investigation. Jimenez and a woman he shares a child with were involved in a single-vehicle accident.
When deputies arrived, they met with the woman in the emergency room, but she struggled to provide details about the crash because of her injuries. Doctors said the woman had a collapsed lung, internal bleeding and several cuts and scrapes as a result of the crash. She was listed in critical condition, but her injuries were not life-threatening, the affidavit says.
Deputies later determined that the crash was not accidental. The woman said Jimenez wanted to meet and talk about their son’s health. The boy has severe lung-related issues, the affidavit says, so the woman agreed to meet Jimenez.
She picked him up, and when he got into her car, Jimenez started to talk about their relationship that had recently ended. The woman became upset that he used their son as an excuse to get together, the affidavit says. She told Jimenez the two were going to be together only for their son’s sake, but she no longer wanted to be in a relationship with him.
That’s when he took matters into his own hands, police say.
The affidavit says Jimenez grabbed the steering wheel from the passenger side and told the woman, “You are better off dead if you’re not with me.” He then jerked the steering and witnesses reported seeing the vehicle abruptly swerve off the road.
Jimenez sustained some injuries during the crash and was taken to Delray Medical Center to receive treatment. Jail records show he is still being hospitalized but is in the sheriff’s office’s custody, being held without bond pending a March 6 court date.
