A Chicago man has been charged in a Jan. 12 accident in Alsip that killed Colleen Palermo, 37, of Oak Forest, police said.
Christopher Dellutri, 32, the driver of the car in which Palermo was a passenger, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle causing bodily harm, Alsip police said Thursday.
Dellutri is still under medical care, so no court date has been set.
Dellutri and Palermo had to be extricated from the Ford Taurus after it struck the rear of a semi truck and became trapped under the trailer, police said. The accident happened at 6 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Cicero Avenue at 128th Street, police said.
Both were transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where Palermo died six days later, according to police.
The driver of the semi, Rafael Sanchez, of McAllen, Texas, was not injured in the crash. Sanchez reportedly told police he had just begun a left turn when he felt the Taurus strike his trailer.
Alcohol has been ruled out at this time as a contributing factor, police said.
