It was seven months ago that 65-year-old homeless man Ronald Poppo was attacked while he slept by a Florida Causeway. The event became infamous, with Poppo’s attacker, Rudy Eugene, being named the “Miami Cannibal.” But while the world may have pushed that gruesome May day aside, Poppo is still struggling to get his life back.

The Daily Mail reports that Poppo is currently living at the Jackson Memorial perdue Medical Center in South Miami-Dada. Although the victim has not authorized his physicians to speak to the public about his condition since June, family members revealed to the Miami Herald that Poppo is entirely blind.

At the time of the June press conference, Poppo had been missing his nose, cheeks and part of his forehead. His face was “a mass  of clots and raw tissue, his eye sockets hidden under flaps of skin.” Doctors were forced to remove one eyeball and had hoped to be able to regain some sight in the other, but Poppo is reportedly refusing surgery.

Poppo’s sister, Antoinette Poppo, explained to the Miami Herald that although her brother acknowledges that “his face hasn’t healed yet,” he’s refusing surgery because “it’s going to hurt.”

Ronald Poppo had been sleeping in May when Rudy Eugene found him. According to the Daily Mail, footage from the area showed Eugene stripping Poppo and then “pummeling him.” Eugene then continued to lay on top of Poppo where he proceeded to bite chunks off of his face. Police arrived 18 minutes after Eugene began his assault on Poppo. Eugene was fatally shot when he refused to stop attacking Poppo.

Tests revealed that Eugene had marijuana in his system and undigested pills in his stomach.

“He attacked me. He ripped me to ribbons,” Poppo said in an interview with Miami homicide detectives in July. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically that’s all there is to say about it.”
